Major social media outlets like Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Twitter offer viewers millions of new posts, pictures and videos every day. They are our competition. It is not easy for even highly accomplished social media stars to go viral consistently.

Hollywood has been making movies for well over a century, but even the most successful producers can’t accurately predict which movies will be a hit and which will flop. Most movies fop and lose money. Often big money. If Hollywood doesn’t know what will be a hit, you and I can’t be sure either. Sometimes content goes viral quickly. Sometimes slowly. Most content doesn’t go viral. Creating viral content is a marathon. Not a sprint. Plenty of patience is required. We need to keep creating the most valuable content we can and keep upgrading it. For your consideration, here is a check list to swing the odds more in your favor.  Some are general. Some may apply to your particular situation.
ONE: Know Your Big “Why” For Going Viral. Design Your Content Accordingly

The starting place to create viral content is your “why”. For example, do you want to go viral to?

* Sell your products
* Publicize your personal or company brand
* Garner votes for a political candidate
* Inspire people
* Promote a cause
* Inform people about something
* Entertain
* Generate sales leads
* Have viewers sign a petition
* Attract viewers to your website or store
* Raise money for a cause.
Whatever your reason, going viral can give your personal brand, business or cause a big boost. Your reason for wanting to go viral determines much about your content creation. Such as the type of content, design used etc. For example, a key decision may be whether to use professional production or homemade appeal. This will largely depend on your “why”.

DECIDE ON YOUR GOAL

For example, how many views do you want to achieve?

How do you wish people to respond to your content?

These decisions will give you a standard to measure your results.

TWO: APPEAL TO STRONG EMOTIONS

Go emotional. We humans are emotional beings. Emotions trump rational thought. Appealing to strong emotions can help our content go viral. Such emotions include compassion, love, calls to right wrongs and rants. Let’s look at some examples.

COMPASSION

LOVE

Love, in its various forms, (romantic love, parental love etc.) is an evergreen topic. The kind of stories which make people go “Awww” will never be outdated.

RANTS

Rants can go viral if the topic resonates with many people.

THREE: BE RELATABLE

Sometimes content goes viral because it portrays a situation many people relate to. For example, many relate to the annoyance of being stuck in an airport because it happens all too often. The viral airport video below depicts a man using the forced delay to create a music video.

<a target=”_blank” rel=”nofollow” href=”https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=viral+airport+video+dion&view=detail&mid=C3018C5F5DF3F4E6AD53C3018C5F5DF3F4E6AD53&FORM=VIRE”>https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=viral+airport+video+dion&view=detail&mid=C3018C5F5DF3F4E6AD53C3018C5F5DF3F4E6AD53&FORM=VIRE</a&gt;

Many families can also relate to teaching teen age children to drive, as in this viral video.

FOUR: HAVE A HOOK

Every hit song has a hook. A song’s hook is often the chorus, which stands out in people’s memories. You also need a hook to create viral content. Some of the hooks you may use are:

Drama

Often viral content is dramatic. Dramatic content is more likely to be shared.
Humor

People love to be entertained. We often make multimillionaires out of people who make us laugh, sing, dance and just forget our troubles for awhile. Humor is a powerful driver of viral messages.

FIVE: DEMONSTRATE SKILLS

SIX: BE CONTROVERSIAL

Being controversial could mean advocating opinions which are unusual or simply standing out by being yourself fearlessly.

SEVEN: HAVE ANIMALS

There are many viral videos involving animals. Here are some good examples.

<a target=”_blank” rel=”nofollow” href=”https://www.viralviralvideos.com/tag/animals/”>https://www.viralviralvideos.com/tag/animalg/animals/</a&gt;

EIGHT: FIND AN UNUSUAL WAY TO USE A POPULAR ITEM

The Chewbaca Mom’s light hearted fun loving spirit captured the internet and allowed her to make hundreds of thousands of dollars, in cash and gifts, from this video.

<a target=”_blank” rel=”nofollow” href=”https://www4.bing.com/videos/search?q=chewbaca+mom+video&view=detail&mid=83A6D70B7BE762EB959183A6D70B7BE762EB9591&FORM=VIRE”>https://www4.bing.com/videos/search?q=chewbaca+mom+video&view=detail&mid=83A6D70B7BE762EB959183A6D70B7BE762EB9591&FORM=VIRE</a&gt;

NINE: DANCE

Dance videos sometimes go viral for the dancer’s skill, as in the first video. Sometimes, for their emotional content, as in the second.

TEN: CRAFT A COMPELLING HEADLINE

The headline is much more likely to be read than anything else. Often the best headlines occur to us after we’ve completed the creative work. Don’t be afraid to wait till the end to create your headline.

Our intuition is often wrong on what the market prefers. The headline is so important that many companies run split tests, of the same ad with different headlines, to see which headline pulls best. Do an online search for sites and apps which can help you improve your headlines.
ELEVEN:  MAKE CONTENT EASY TO READ, DOWNLOAD AND SHARE

Not much to say here. Just make sure to do it.
TWELVE:  HELP SEARCH ENGINES FIND YOU

This is a whole art and science in itself. We can’t possibly hope to do it justice here. There is lots to learn if you get deep into this topic. A few basic principles include:

Use keywords, but don’t over do it.

Make it mobile friendly.

Add your content to major search engines

Have a modern look

Use attractive images

Choose a good domain name

Use descriptions and meta tags.

THIRTEEN: SHARE WIDELY, RESPECTFULLY & AT GOOD TIMES

Be your own biggest fan. Share plenty. We need to do what we want others to do by sharing our content, widely, respectfully, and at good times. Give your friends and supporters a heads up, in advance of releasing your prospective viral content, and tell them you’d appreciate their support.

Be ready to reciprocate. Help others (who create good content) publicize their content regularly. What goes around comes around. Build relationships where you share each others’ content to help each other out. Find out what constitutes spamming in your  community and NEVER to do it!

Post often: 10-15 times daily during your Go Viral campaign.

Best time to post: 9 am and noon EST; when many people begin work. Don’t post at rush hour.

FOURTEEN:  Ask for feedback. When you get feedback; publicize it, respond to it and share it.

FIFTEEN: Try out different social media and find out which ones work best for you.

SIXTEEN: Take a Karmic Approach
Help others go viral and they will help you go viral. Be generous in praise of worthy organizations. Let them know you are mentioning them in your content. It will be in their interest to promote it as much as they can. Publish links back to the original source of your content. Give your sources due credit.
SEVENTEEN:  You probably want to get credit for your awesome viral content. Right? Be sure to brand your content to claim ownership of it.
EIGHTEEN: Review Your Progress Regularly

You’ll probably want to review your progress daily. Perhaps even more often. This can get exciting! Here are some suggested review questions to keep you on track to hit your goals.

What is working?

What part of your project is succeeding? It is encouraging and morale boosting, for you and your team to first look at what is working.

What is not working? What caused your results?

What should you stop doing?

What improvements can you make?

Brainstorm for new ideas to achieve your goals.

FOUR MORE TIPS TO HELP YOUR BUSINESS CONTENT GO VIRAL

1. TAKE A CALCULATED RISK

The same old same old won’t attract enough interest to go viral. We need to offer something entertaining, engaging and out of the ordinary to go viral.
The Dancing Dentist Went Viral

Although dancing and dentistry have no obvious connection, this dancing dentist video went viral and attracted many new patients.

2. MAKE A VIDEO OF DOING YOUR WORK

3. DON’T TRY TO GO VIRAL

This applies to everyone, but especially business content. Concentrate on making great content and serving your customers and prospective customers well.

4. IF YOU’VE GOT THE BUDGET, HIRE SAVVY, WITTY PEOPLE TO HANDLE SOCIAL MEDIA
